Twenty-nine years after the signing of the Treaty of Paris of 1783, which ended the Revolutionary War between America and Britain, was the year that marked the beginning of a new conflict that would last America the next three years, the War of 1812. On June 16th of that year, President James Madison declared the start of a war that would greatly impact the future of our country. Britain, still one of the worlds greatest superpowers, was currently warring with France at the time of the declaration, however, Britains reputation as a formidable opponent stood strong. Gender Inequality in the Workforce â€Å"We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.† (Eisenberg and Ruthsdotter). In this quote it is stated that all men and women are created equal. This is the bedrock of the founding of our country. Is this really followed? Are men and women equal in our society or are we oblivious to the gap between genders? The gap between genders has impacted lives of Americans, causing stereotypes to control the lives of women, and making protests for Women’s Rights more commonly known since the 1960’s. Betty Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique†¦show more content†¦This was known throughout our society’s past that women would be punished for trying to educate themselves or ignore the gender roles that were premeditated. Women were completely frustrat ed and wanted equal opportunities as a man. Women marched, petitioned and lobbied for a law to be passed to have women be equal. Then, in 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment, which had lingered in Congress for almost fifty years, was finally passed and sent to the states for ratification. The Amendment stated, â€Å"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.† (Eisenberg and Ruthsdotter). This was a great accomplishment for women in this time period. When this was passed it gave an opportunity for women to get the jobs they were once denied. This issue is still a recurring problem in society today. One of the most recent current event was The Women’s March which occurred January 21 of 2017. Most of the rallies were aimed at Donald Trump, immediately following his inauguration as President of the United States, largely due to statements that he had made and positions that he had taken which were regarded by many as anti-women or otherwise offensive. It was the largest single-day protest in U.S. history. This protest aimed for women’s rights and along with other issues. The incentives will include the increment in the salary as well as promotions. If the operation manager uses the reward power properly, it will help to motivate the workers. However, if the reward power is misused that is only the favorites are given the rewards; in that case, it can demoralize others (Faiz 2013). Informational power this source of power comes from the knowledge that is valuable for the others. It helps in building trustworthiness as well as rational point of view. Strengths and Weaknesses as a Communicator The estimation of the communication time of the Operation Manager with others is shown in the table below: Communicating individuals Time Employees 5 hours Guests or Customers 4 hours Kitchen staffs 3 hours The strengths of the communicator are as follows: In order to reel the listeners back in, a good communicator asks questions. The main strength of a communicator is that if he can speak well then in that case the inability of the community to stay focused for a long time will be reduced. Being an operation manager in a restaurant, it is very important to be a good communicator so that the staffs listen effectively and do the work appropriately. A good communicator has the ability to ask questions that will in turn draw the attention of the workers (Distefano and Tiner-Sewell 2016). The strength of a good communicator is that he is a friend to everybody. Every individual will prefer to work under someone who can speak well and whatever he is saying is understandable. It is not possible for a speaker to meet each and everyone personally, however, if he is a good communicator that will help him to be a friend to everyone (Hackman and Johnson 2013). A communicator is luminous as well as informative. An operational manager has the potential to have the knowledge about every subject related to the restaurant. The workers will not be interested to listen to someone who does not have a good understanding about whatever he is speaking. However, the individuals will prefer to connect to someone who has the sense of power as well as knowledge (Quintanilla and Wahl 2016). The most important strength of a communicator is that a good communicator speaks with security and self-assurance. Being an operational manager, he needs to possess this quality so that he can speak well with self-assurance to his workers. This will also help him to connect well with the customers on the case if the customer has some problem regarding the food or the environment (Eunson 2012). The weaknesses of the communicator are as follows: It is most probable that there are certain strengths as well as weaknesses of a communicator. A communicator mort often finds it difficult to communicate properly in a meeting. This takes place when the communicator fails to understand the requirements of the people present in the meeting. The weakness also include the fact that while praising an employee for his good work, the operation manager will not be able to give the proper details of the achievement as he will be in a rush to say whatever he has gone through (Chatterjee and Subramanian 2013). The operational manager who has the habit of speaking in jargon will tend to lose the interest of the customers as well as the workers who will be unable to understand those terms. The operation manager also has the potentiality to sound boring, as he will not have the capacity to draw the attention of the individuals working there. Victor Frankenstein Essay The monsters birth is set on a dreary November night, immediately you can see that a tragic event is to be held. Then the event occurs and the monster lying lifeless revitalises with the nature of a newborn baby and awakens for the first time. When the monster opens its eyes the cowardly horror stricken scientist stares back. The scientist, Victor Frankenstein is the center character in the chapters before chapter 11 to 16. Therefore the monster is displayed through the eyes of Victor Frankenstein and is shown from his point of view. Victor uses immensely effective describing words to describe the monster such as: Dull yellow eyes and: Wretch. These words give the abundant impression that the monster is a horrifyingly revolting and unimaginably deformed beast. Victor describes the monster as if it was the most horrendous creature that he had ever set eyes on. Frankenstein is obviously devastated by the futile results of his deranged experiment, his dreams and ambitions had been shattered. Victor had put his utmost devotion and determination into his experiment which had turned out to be a massive calamity. This is shown in the part: How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form? This quotation is a rhetorical question and implicates that Victor had wasted 2 years of his life and had suffered uncountable pains and starvation all for the creation of a worthless and repulsive creature that was of no use to him. Victor Frankenstein then contrasts the features of the monster which he himself had personally selected for his creation. Victor says:His yellow skin covered the work of muscles and arteries and: His teeth of a pearly whiteness, but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes. The contrasting quotation portrays the beautiful features of the monster which have been concealed and masked by the disgusting and atrocious features that its body also obtained. Victor then grievingly describes his emotions and feelings about the wretched results that he had attained. He describes the monster as a complete squander of time and space which he could have put into use and value in other methods. This is shown in the parts: For this I had deprived myself of rest and health and: Breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. These quotations are very effective in expressing Victors feelings and they display how Frankensteins dreams and desires to re-animate life had been totally destroyed and shattered due to the horrendous monster of a creation which he had resulted with. After the monsters intriguing birth in chapter 11 it was abandoned and left neglected by its own creator, Victor Frankenstein. This is when the monsters tale commences and from then forwards the monsters life is viewed through its own eyes and it is the central character. This change of central character affects our view of the monster and changes our opinion and judgement about him. Sex Hormones In Women SEX HORMONES IN WOMEN The main issue I m going to discuss is Premenstrual Syndrome, or PMS. It is a constellation of symptoms that directly precedes menstruation. These symptoms vary from woman to woman. PMS is a hormonal disorder characterized by a regularly recurring group of symptoms. These symptoms may occur from two to fourteen days before a woman's menstrual period, usually disappearing after the period begins and directly followed by a symptom-free time each month. PMS symptoms can be both emotional and physical, affecting almost every system of the body. Some symptoms of other medical conditions can resemble PMS. Some of these conditions include allergies, depression, diabetes, dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, fibrocystic breast disease, and thyroid problems. To help determine whether you suffer from PMS, use symptom charting, as PMS symptoms usually come and go each month and at the same time. PMS symptoms occur in the second half of the menstrual cycle. During this time, production of the hormone Progesterone should increase and peak. About seven days before the menstrual period, Estrogen and Progesterone levels decrease dramatically, causing menstruation to occur. PMS symptoms occur as a result of low levels of progesterone, excessive levels of estrogen and/or fluctuations in both levels. Many women find that PMS worsens with age. This also suggests a correlation with hormone levels being out of balance. There are many treatments for PMS. Some of these treatments are exersize, having a balanced diet, the best way to have a balance diet and to reduce PMS is to have 6 small meals everyday instead of three large meals. Both of these techniques can help women reduce the symptoms of PMS. Recent studies are indicating that girls are going through puberty at earlier ages. The question that arises on many peoples minds is: What's causing it? and what are the pychological effects? Melissa Carter could not believe that her daughter started developing breast buds at the young age of four. A few weeks later they disappeared but three yeas later at the age of seven they stared coming back and began to develop further along with growing pubic hair she thought that her daughter was way to young for this growth. They put her on pill lupron but it made there daughter have terrible mood swings so at the age of nine they took her off it and she started her period and had full grown breasts. Why is this happening? Could it be the water? that is a definite possibility. Others feel that it could be linked to milk or beef, also obesity. Among Caucasians today 1 out of every seven girls are developing breasts and pubic hair by the age of 8. Among African Americans 1 out of every 2 are developing at that age. Studies show that many girls are losing there childhood's by growing through puberty at such an early age. The most common instance of this are in obese children, however this is not a definite cause. Some of the cause are: * PCB's- these long lived chemicals, once used in electric power industry, may jump start reproductive development. phthalates- a study speculates that they may have caused two year olds in Puerto Rico to grow breasts. But the link is far from proved. * HORMONES IN MILK AND MEAT- there given to help cattle grow bigger, produce more. Some think hormones linger in food and wreck havoc. * FAT CELLS- lepitin, a protein secreted by these cells, is involved in the progression of puberty. The nations obesity epidemic makes lepitin a prime suspect. *DDE- though the US banned the pesticide DDT in 1972, this breakdown product persists in the environment. These are just some of the things people suspect could be causing early development in children at such young ages but no one is for sure on why or what is causing this strange phenomenon. How to Write Your First Screenplay How to Write Your First Screenplay How to Write Your First Screenplay By Ali Hale Have you ever daydreamed about writing for the big screen? I know I have! Writing a screenplay that gets picked up by Hollywood could see your story reach millions of people – whereas even bestselling novels often only sell in the tens of thousands. Writing a screenplay is very different from writing a short story or a novel, though. There are some specific conventions that you need to know about, in terms of the structure of your story itself, and in terms of how you lay it out on the page. I’m not going to attempt to give you an exhaustive guide in a single blog post – but I’ll take you through all the basics, and give you plenty of links to further reading so you can dig deeper on particular areas of screenwriting that interest you. What’s the Difference Between a Screenplay and a Script? Scripts for plays are laid out slightly differently. They’re designed to be performed live, rather than pre-recorded and shown on a screen. They’ll include stage directions (like â€Å"Exit, stage left† – or Shakespeare’s famous, â€Å"Exit, pursued by a bear†). Screenplays are scripts for something that will be filmed and later â€Å"screened† – shown in the cinema or on TV. They’ll often include instructions for specific shots – e.g. â€Å"CLOSE UP†. Assuming that you’re writing for film, they’ll also have specific length requirements. Coming Up With an Idea for a Screenplay Just as with any type of fiction you write, having a strong idea is essential. Your screenplay should be able to be summed up in a â€Å"logline† – a one-sentence summary of the plot. This logline should include: The protagonist (hero) – e.g. A suburban mother of two. Their goal – e.g. must save her husband The antagonist (villain) or antagonistic force – from a deranged and deadly neighbour. As James Burbridge says, in a great post about constructing a logline: If you can’t write a decent logline of your idea  before  embarking on the script, then maybe reconsider writing that thing. If it’s unfocused and muddled at the loglines stage, it’s not going to get any better as you write. If you’re short of ideas, you might look for inspiration from: Art or music – could something you’ve seen or heard spark off your story? Something you wrote in the past – perhaps you didn’t have enough material for a novel but it would make a great screenplay. A classic story – there have been many, many films based on fairy tales (Disney has probably cornered the market in these!) and Shakespeare. Your idea needs to be something that will take about 100 – 120 minutes to play out on screen. A minute on the screen equates to about one page of script so that means that your screenplay should be between 100 and 120 pages (when laid out with proper formatting, which we’ll come onto in a moment). Planning and Structuring Your Screenplay All writing has structure, and if you’ve written so much as a short story, you’ll know how important it is to have a beginning, middle and end. Screenplays have a more detailed structure, though. You might think this is restrictive – but there’s a lot you can do within this structure, and it’ll help you shape your ideas so your story doesn’t drag. The standard screenplay structure looks like this: Act I – roughly the first 25% of your screenplay. (20 – 30 minutes on the screen.) This is often called the â€Å"setup† – it’s where you introduce your characters and their world and get the story started. Act II – the middle 50% of your screenplay. (Up to an hour on the screen.) This is often called the â€Å"confrontation† – it’s where you complicate the story and the tension rises. Act III – the final 25% of your screenplay. (A final 20 – 30 minutes.) This is often called the â€Å"resolution† – it’s where there’s a confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist (or antagonistic force) and – normally – the protagonist prevails. Within these acts, there are particular points that you’re expected to hit at specific stages: The first turning point: this comes towards the end of Act I, and it changes things. It’s where the protagonist discovers something, or does something, that means nothing will ever be the same. This is what really kicks off the story. For instance, in the story a suburban mother of two must save her husband from a deranged and deadly neighbour, the first turning point might be the neighbour threatening or even attacking the husband. The second turning point: this comes towards the end of the second act. It raises the stakes and moves the story into the third act. For instance, this second turning point might have the neighbour kidnapping one of the children: the mother needs to rescue her child and protect her husband. There are plenty of other â€Å"points† that screenwriters are advised to meet, though you’ll probably find there’s some debate about what exactly these are! There’s a good breakdown of the five-point structure here, which you might want to follow. Laying Out Your Screenplay on the Page Screenplays require a very specific format, which is different from scripts written to be performed on stage. (For instance, these scripts will have character names on the left, with a colon after them, and screenplays have character names centred, with no colon.) For your screenplay, you should use the font Courier New, size 12. Why? Because that way, all scripts fit the same number of lines on a page – making it easy to estimate their run-time from the page count. (Courier is a fixed-width font, so each letter takes up the same amount of space.) Here’s how the first few lines of a script might look: Ive annotated it with some notes about the way in which its laid out. The easiest way to make sure you’re formatting your screenplay correctly is to use specialised software: Final Draft is the industry standard, used by the majority of professional screenwriters but it’s pricy ($249.99). Scrivener can be used to format screenplays (as well as novel manuscripts) – it’s not as specialised as Final Draft, but it’s a lot cheaper ($45). Each of these offer a free trial, so you can give them a try before deciding whether or not to purchase them. Writing a screenplay is no small undertaking – and we’ve only covered the basics of what you need to know. IBP history dates back to the early 1900s, being a merger of two former Trade Unions. The Teamsters' National Union is the Foundation stone for the Union. It was established by truck drivers and deliverymen from Chicago who had defied the A merican Federation of Labor (AFL) attempts of creating a teamsters trade union. The Union later merged with Team Drivers' International Union (The Union formed by AFL), to form the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). The new group now registered as an affiliated group to the AFL. At its inception, the Teamster Union aimed at ensuring fare working conditions for the members. Its leadership structure has smaller subsidiary groups called Locals. The Locals elect their own leaders who then elect the national leaders. The initial membership consisted of deliverymen using horse drawn vehicles, until in the 1930s after Truck Drivers surpassed them. From the onset of the Union, its mandate has been representing the rights of truck drivers, service deliverymen and other similar job groups. The Union has a great bargaining power, fueled by its large membership as well as its capacity to hamper the transportation of important goods. It has always been important to the AFL, for a stri ke by its members would hamper the movement of products throughout the nation.
